Quelques remarques sur l’«iconoclasme» des avant-gardes



This paper is trying to show the connections between the artistic practice of the avant-garde and the spirit of historical iconoclasm. In their manifests, for example, the artists of the thirties talk very often about iconoclastic attitudes, such as destruction, breaking, refusal of all kinds of traditions, and they try to prescribe an art entirely devoted to life. The avant-garde also brings into the public’s attention the possibility of using some words such as “iconoclasm”, “inconoclastic” in a figurative way, which means great changes in art’s perception all over the 20th century. The examples come mostly from the area of Romanian avant-garde, but not only.
